The Royal Navy submarine HMS Onyx was the only non-nuclear submarine to take part in the Falklands conflict. This meant that it was the only submarine that could operate underwater near the coast of theFalkland Islands . Its main job was to land Special Forces; usually after dark, using canoes or rubber boats. HMS Onyx carried twenty men from the SAS and the Special Boat Squadron in addition to her full crew. It was so crowded that it was nicknamed "The Sardine's Revenge". This class was to the RN's submarine arm what the Whitby/Rothesay/Leander
series was to the escort arm. The class was notable for it's quietness. The last Oberon Left service in 1993.
